Tanto/Pachinko!

Made this slingshot today. I named it "Tanto/Pachinko", as "pachinko" means "slingshot" and "tanto" means "dagger".

The handle is the original tanto one, I just welded a slingshot frame that fits the same as the blade. These two are now fully interchangeable.

Feels great in the hand!

I did not polish the steel, just brushed it to give it a rough "fighting" look. A most unusual slingshot.

  1. Two awesome weapons in one! This looks very nice, with this combination you could survive any situation.

  2. I was fascinated by Japanese swords when i was a kid, but i later realized that projectile weapons are more fun.

  3. So this is the best of both worlds, right?

  4. absolutely amazing, crazy, yes, but still amazing, I see it now, ninjas with slingshots take that samurai!

  5. Looks great--did you make the case and handle for the dagger?

My old and new passion combined in one toy and tool :)
I like that the pin (mekugi) and the hole in the frame are holding everything in place like in the original. Have you thought about making the frame to look a bit older? Some acid dye or even a lemon juice if this is a carbon steel.
Very interesting one, that’s for sure :)

  8. This is great looking, but i want to see the canoon .

  9. I did not know that pachinko means slingshot! Japaneses are crazy playing those pachinko machines. By the way, the balls used on that machines are great for shoting with slingshot, and they have looooads!!
Really nice and original japanese style interchangeable weapons.

  13. "A most unusual slingshot."
That's not a surprise. When was the last time you made a usual one? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  14. that is so unbelievable .. have you ever thought about a collapsible baton slingshot?

  15. A "Schweizer Offiziersmesser", Samurai-Style.

    I want this one!

Although it may be tricky to change the blade or slingshot on the fly.

    Great one!!!

  16. LOL Every time I wonder, "How will he top this?", or "Now what is left to do?", you come up with something from left field. I am impressed as always. Pity you can only use one at a time. NASA could use a fellow with your innovative mind. All the best!

    ReplyDelete
  17. NASA? Maybe shooting the rockets to outter space with a gigantic Rocket-Launcher-Slingshot!? Sounds fun :P nvm.

I would've loved this Ninja thing when i was a kid. I wanted to be a ninja, bought a sword at a garage sale and *swing* a big cut in my parents couch... do i have to say that i never saw that sword again? ^^

  18. That is awesome i can imagine a ninja with one!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Genius!! A slingshot to pear with a ninjas favorite weapon! Awesome!

  20. @Howard~ Think of the cost savings of rocket fuel! Heck, it they can make a sling to shoot off two people at amusement parks, then why not a satellite by something the inventive mind of Joerg Sprave could cook up? FYI, I've mentioned in a previous post he should be shot off in one of those amusement park sling shots with video for us to see. I think it would be poetic justice, and right and fitting! :) (oddly, he never responded.) :)

  21. that is so cool, only thing i can add is build or modify the sheath so you can pull it out like a tanto

    ReplyDelete
  22. that is great!

i had an idea about the dogwood forks, because they polish up so nicely have you thought about carving one to look like it is made out of bones? that would be sweet!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Very nice. Love seeing your YouTube vids!

  24. Now I'd like to see the slingshot launch the tanto blade; maybe some aerodynamic adjustments for the extreme ninja... I have seen your work for the first time tonight, my favorite is the olive wood handle, very beautiful wood. I think I need to learn to shoot a sling... cheers

  25. I can see it now. Dusk is just coming on in a clearing in a bamboo forest. A man wearing a straw hat assumes a ready stance and grabs the hilt of his sword. About twenty feet away, Joerg, in traditional swordsman clothing, does the same, ready for this ronin. The ronin assumes a dash straight for Joerg, who, immediately, draws his sword. But, he draws far too early leaving himself open for- wait a minute! That's not a sword at all, it's a slingshot! Joerg pulls out a steel ball and fires at the ronin, knocking him unconscious. The ronin learns a valuable lesson: do not underestimate the power of the slingshot!

  26. man this is excellent! similar to the hand gun/folding knife scales idea I mentioned but much nicer. I like the name too. Pachinko is the old school/classic way of referring to the slingshot.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @Mr D Sir: Great short story, I enjoyed it. Thanks for that!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well, I know I'll get a lot of hate for this but this is the first of your designs I'm not that crazy about, sorry. The first and last two photos looks like the slingshot is mounted on a monopod for a camera (the side views). I could see how the sword handle would feel good in the the hand to grip but not sure if it's practicale or fits the theme of the sword.... If the end of the slingshot was a knife blade that could be drawn and used, I like it more as being more in keeping with the Japanese sword theme or ninja theme. Of course, that's just me.
As always, great imageination and skill and please keep pushing the limits in Slingshot design!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think if you could put the slingshot on the other side, while still keeping the blade, it would be awesome! Some kind of deadly ninja combo-weapon!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yellow :)
@Udjee Lepus – yap, shooting that combo would be a hell of a fun.
Especially with the flip of a wrist if it’s needed ;) :)
And you would have to make a new handle for that one.
    Cheers

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  35. oh hell xD what a great idea^^ let's shoot Shurikens with it^^

    ReplyDelete
  44. cool, you can shoot your prey from a distance and then finish them off if theyre still clinging to life.

  65. Servus Joerg,

    ReplyDelete
  66. I like it!
Every Ninja deadly assassin should have one...

    ReplyDelete
  67. That is one scary looking slingshot man.

    ReplyDelete
  68. may i ask where you got the tanto from? also collecting many weapons including iaito, but i think that one is real steel?

    ReplyDelete
  69. As a lover of all things Japanese (married a Japanese girl ;) ) and your slingshots, I really like this!
You really have a talent for expanding and innovating what is essentially a very basic design.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'm glad you didn't polish it Joerg, it gives it a much nicer look just being brushed.

My only criticism would be that there is a lot of unused handle beneath where you would grip it, as the handle you used is designed for use with both hands. BUT like I said, it is my only criticism and other than that I really like it!

    ReplyDelete
  71. lol, I thought your slingshots were badass, but this sword is just awesome

    ReplyDelete
  72. God yes, that thing looks beastly.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I have the same tanto, but I found it hard to disassemble it. How hard was it to disassemble?
