Seems like the slingshot cannon video will soon be viral. It saw 45,000 views in the first 36 hours already, with a steep increase! People love it, almost 1300 likes and just 6 dislikes...
I was just covered in "Stern View Magazin", a German magazine focussed very much on photos (only a few lines of text). Two pages! They said that the only challenge I did not master was to make a bowling ball slingshot...
The Discovery History Channel did a project a few years back, about building two of Leonardo's designs - the glider and also the giant crossbow. The glider worked, but the crossbow did not. The wooden limbs broke, weren't elastic enough.
Using a ton of rubber instead of the wood would no doubts work much better.
What do you think?

Außerdem hat ein Kind meine alte Zwille bei einer Gruppenstunden vor einigen Wochen zerstört und ich brauch selbst eine Neue :D

Using rubber would surely put a lot of problems out of designers/builders head :)

Actually, here's another thought from a Pyrate perspective - a Swivel Gun! Actually the most common gun from the heyday o' Pyrates as it was most practical, faster to load and disabled a ship/crew without sinking it! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swivel_gun

ReplyDeleteTheir pouch was pretty bad they could have easily got more yardage. Your pouches and release mechanisms have been pretty impressive. Any trouble with them cause there hasn't been any in your videos.

ReplyDeleteYou could probably create a reflex bow by steam/water bending & ply gluing. Using one mold to create both sides would cut down on costs. Bottle jacks are great for this purpose.
ReplyDeleteIf you are going all wood and were planning on having the limbs bend at all you might want to put some heavy elastic backing on the bow to prevent it from snapping.

ReplyDeleteI personally think that some time in the future, and full scale siege slingshot should be made, something that actually needs a trailer to move, shooting cannon balls that can actually tip a car over, or at least move it back.

ReplyDeleteI'd worry about using too much rubber, based on the strength of the overall crossbow frame. I don't know how much stress the wood can take, so I don't know for sure. I hope you manage to find that perfect formula though.

ReplyDeleteYou could consider sponsorship, if it really goes viral it gains a lot attention. Dankung or something, but slingshotsellers don't look like big companies to me so it would surprise me if they had a budget for promotional activities.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely think you can make a bowlingball fly. But apart from that. I don't hear anybody about the fact that a crossbow doesn't gains it strength from the string but from the bow. It may look like a crossbow, but it really isn't. It will be a slingshot with a inefficient angle of the rubber.
Since I guess the bow will be cosmetic and the angle from the rubber just isn't the most effective. I would go for the cannon design, but larger.
If you use bowlingball as the ammo how about the target?A huge cone?

Andreas, I don't plan to use a wooden bow and simply attach rubber bands to it. The "fork" would be relatively narrow (not too narrow for huge projectiles of course).
ReplyDeleteI simply would do what I believe Leonardo would have done if he had access to modern rubber. There is no way he would still have employed the wide bow.
Your love for all things Slingshot is epic.
ReplyDeleteAh, in that case it makes sense. That also has the advantage of having a single beam. And there is no need for the circle at the end to keep it stable.
ReplyDeleteIf the design allows alterations, it could also be used for launching other things. Like big arrows (and babies). Something that I think would be harder to realize with the cannondesign.

Christian, Gummi hat Vor- und Nachteile. Hauptvorteil ist die hohe Dehnbarkeit = langer Beschleunigungsweg (550% der Ausgangslänge). Bei gleicher Zugkraft ist ein langer Weg immer besser (Kraft mal Weg = Arbeit, weißt Du sicher noch aus der Physikstunde).

ReplyDeleteIt looks like you have to build the bow in a foldable manner, then you can construct it as a trailer, just like the sailplanes, that you see from time to time on the highway. :) 10 meter long, 5 meters high, but only 2 in width ... Good luck!

ReplyDeleteYour crossbow frames will NOT work. You will have to design something new but the only thing I can think of is two thick boards, one on top of each other (with grooves) to guide the ball, as well as providing support for the frame. The bowling ball is very heavy so you will most likely need spear gun rubber, if not an even stronger rubber. I've been hoping to win one of your slingshots Joerg, but so do many other people. Jorg, You have done it! I never laughed so hard in all my life. Awesome is the only word I can think of. When the ammo hit the tower, I fell out of my chair. ReplyDeleteBefore, you have used rollers to minimize the amount of dead rubber in your draw. I'm a little curious as to why you didn't apply rollers to the front of your cannon and extend the rubber around the cannon a bit. I'm no mathematician, and only have a cursory knowledge of slingshots, but I can't help but wonder what it would do.

If that is a person standing on the bow , Joergs would not need to be as big as this as he will use rubber to power the bow so it will take much less space. Just add some massive electric motor to draw the weapon lol

ReplyDeleteBender, the rollers extend the draw and make the weapon shorter. That is interesting for compact designs. A cannon does not have to be compact. You want more draw, you simply make the barrel longer.
