Bowling Ball Slingshot based on Leonardo Da Vinci' Design?

Seems like the slingshot cannon video will soon be viral. It saw 45,000 views in the first 36 hours already, with a steep increase! People love it, almost 1300 likes and just 6 dislikes...

I was just covered in "Stern View Magazin", a German magazine focussed very much on photos (only a few lines of text). Two pages! They said that the only challenge I did not master was to make a bowling ball slingshot...

The Discovery History Channel did a project a few years back, about building two of Leonardo's designs - the glider and also the giant crossbow. The glider worked, but the crossbow did not. The wooden limbs broke, weren't elastic enough.

Using a ton of rubber instead of the wood would no doubts work much better.

What do you think?

  2. The Boss says your the man for the job!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Can you give us some specs on this behemoth?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hope you have a chainsaw, I'm picturing a tree for the glider and another for the bow, compared to that person in the picture it looks as big a house. Good luck man!

  5. Being a siege engineer hundreds of years ago would have be awesome!

  6. bsmalls, there is a whole book about it. Just ordered my copy from amazon. It should have a lot of details.

  7. Awesome! That is probably the pinnacle of slingshots and crossbows. That's like a final thing to retire on.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Beim nächsten Test bitte kein Bier mehr verwenden!!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I need slingshot, please send 1 to Croatia!! Please!!! I love you man!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Here's the Cannon now here's the cannon on steroids. That thing is huge!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Where would you launch that? you would need air clearance lol

    ReplyDelete
  12. You should try and get the government to fund it, tell them its part of a missile defense project.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Heh, heh, heh. I think it's a natural. You're in the same league with Leonardo, aren't you? Never knew he squired someone in Germany, however. :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. If you get it down pat you can launch people into a net or something, make a lot of money.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Are there any castles in Germany to destroy?

    ReplyDelete
  16. wow are you planning on making it?

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  18. Do you think its possible? Wood can only do so much. It will be a great accomplishment if you could, let us know your plans!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yellow :)
As I read some time ago master Leonardo has always put some kind of misleading part in his drawings to make harder to steal his ideas. So be double careful :D
Using rubber would surely put a lot of problems out of designers/builders head :)
    Cheers
    Rafal

  20. I will have to find the money and the location, plus the time slot. This monster can only be made on site, really. And yes, it is certainly possible.

    ReplyDelete
  21. would you use wood or metal? but finding those three things you mentioned will probably be the hardest part. The building and testing are the fun parts. As always good luck Jörg!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Good luck Jörg! We know you can do it!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Considering what ye accomplished with the Cannon, this would seem to be the next logical challenge for ye!
BTW, in all me years o' using slingshots I have never been aware of the beautiful - and powerful - creations such as yours until now...these are amazing! The Cannon is bloody brilliant!
Actually, here's another thought from a Pyrate perspective - a Swivel Gun! Actually the most common gun from the heyday o' Pyrates as it was most practical, faster to load and disabled a ship/crew without sinking it! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swivel_gun

Keep up the great work, mate!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Give us an idea of how much rubber you would use for this project!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Has to be done really doesnt it?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jörg have you seen this?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beIJJRmEfWA
I think its your destiny to atleast break a world record. Even if you don't use metal you can find some giant oak trees and make the same setup.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Great idea one more time, and you will make it work as usual:)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I second Lefty's idea, but maybe after the Da Vinci project.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You should have it over a lake, go duck hunting with it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh wow this thing looks like it could take down a house!! I can't wait to see it in action.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Of course I know the border slingshot. I would have achieved far better results with a much lighter draw, though. Their pouch design was lousy.

    ReplyDelete
  32. oooo sounds like you want a redo of the border slingshot too, either choice would be incredible.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Their pouch was pretty bad they could have easily got more yardage. Your pouches and release mechanisms have been pretty impressive. Any trouble with them cause there hasn't been any in your videos.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Maybe if you upscale the Da Vinci you can beat the border slingshot. 2 birds 1 large steel ball.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Looks like an awesome challenge!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Did you notice the dimensions? Just look at the person standing next to the "object"! You have to build this, Jörg!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I hope you have a good build team!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. What will you use to demonstrate it? I dare say it would make short work of a car.

    ReplyDelete
  39. You could probably create a reflex bow by steam/water bending & ply gluing. Using one mold to create both sides would cut down on costs. Bottle jacks are great for this purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If you are going all wood and were planning on having the limbs bend at all you might want to put some heavy elastic backing on the bow to prevent it from snapping.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wow That looks big! Goodluck!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Of course I have to use rubber instead of wood as energy storage media. After all, this is The Slingshot Channel!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Here's a quick mold idea. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/pooK9S9nAnvgRVYQOQKt1FtmKeKwXgCrgA5XxBcL7Cg?feat=directlink

    ReplyDelete
  45. TurkeyTrot that looks extremely fun and extremely dangerous! can you imagine getting launched by that thing, that girl has to have whiplash now.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Launching a bowling ball would be impressive. I would also like to see one of those shot-puts go through a car door.

    ReplyDelete
  47. That looks wicked! Looking forward to it!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Nice! I'm picturing a bowling ball just crushing a car.

    ReplyDelete
    Raging.Bull

  50. jeorg have you got my pm? im not uset to this site so i dont know if it has sent just checking if not please email me : addy_mc123@hotmail.com or if you have got the email please just say here. thanks

    ReplyDelete
  51. I personally think that some time in the future, and full scale siege slingshot should be made, something that actually needs a trailer to move, shooting cannon balls that can actually tip a car over, or at least move it back.
    Love your videos!

    ReplyDelete
  52. From cannon to giant Crossbow ... you don't stop man! Good Stuff!

    ReplyDelete

Mckeee, yes, received your info. Will send the slingshot out, but since I am travelling at the moment it will take a week or so.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Its a wrecking machine! Can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Looks Great! It will look even better when you build it!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I agree, lot of people must have liked the cannon and want a slingshot now!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Those are pretty cool slingshots and that Crossbow is intense!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'd worry about using too much rubber, based on the strength of the overall crossbow frame. I don't know how much stress the wood can take, so I don't know for sure. I hope you manage to find that perfect formula though.

    ReplyDelete
  59. With all the slingshot you have I'm surprised you don't have a rubber factory.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Would you ever consider putting rollers on this monster and changing the bands accordingly? :D

    ReplyDelete
  61. Enjoy coordinating it! It might be hard but it will be worth it. Just like the cannon!

    ReplyDelete
  62. rollers on this would be sick you'd be able to launch it so far.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Jorge long time watcher of your slingshot builds and shoots. Extremely impressed with them, and has awakened a love for slingshots I haven't had in years! Keep up the great work!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hi, That looks incredible and your cannon was amazing! I have a question on an old video tho. How did you make the collapsible arrows?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Very cool idea! Good luck with it!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Great idea, go for it! good luck mate :)!!.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Amazing Cannon looking forward to a legendary crossbow!

    ReplyDelete
  68. i want to win a cougar slingshot!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Have you ever played paintball with slingshots? If you get 2 squads that would make a cool video and you can compare individual slingshots. Just an idea if your bored!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I would love to see you take this Da Vinci' design and make something large and destructive with it! These BIG projects are really great! Of course, you can never forget the good old fashioned slingshot. I would love to see more videos of basic custom slingshots.

Take care and keep doing what you do best!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I immediately thought of this when I read about the limb failure.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znFsQgYBqsM&feature=related

Not sure if that'll help but I figured it couldn't hurt to post it. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I want something so big you can shoot a cars engine at it... Keep being awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  73. being able to shoot a solid round approaching the weight of todays modern artillery shells with respectable range and velocity with a 'rubber' powered machine would be outstanding

    ReplyDelete
  74. I just watched you make attempts on the life of an elderly car on your youtube channel. I say you build this machine, and go back to finish the job.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Think you should and probbebly wil buildt it :)
BUT i do think you should be sponsord by Stern View Magazin for the costs and the sight to buildt it. Since they dared you i feel that would be the right thing too do by them.

    All the best.

  77. hello

i just find your videos on youetube and i fell in love :D and i got so happy that you are giving away slingshots. I rly like to have one so i hope that i will win one.

    /Robin

    ReplyDelete
  78. honestly is there anything that you HAVENT shot out of a slingshot? youve already made one monster of a slingshot i have no doubts that one like this would be any problem for you!! give it a shot and let me/us know how it goes!!! You Da man Jorg!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Not much left to say but "Go for it!"

    ReplyDelete
  80. You could consider sponsorship, if it really goes viral it gains a lot attention. Dankung or something, but slingshotsellers don't look like big companies to me so it would surprise me if they had a budget for promotional activities.

I absolutely think you can make a bowlingball fly. But apart from that. I don't hear anybody about the fact that a crossbow doesn't gains it strength from the string but from the bow. It may look like a crossbow, but it really isn't. It will be a slingshot with a inefficient angle of the rubber.

Since I guess the bow will be cosmetic and the angle from the rubber just isn't the most effective. I would go for the cannon design, but larger.

    ReplyDelete
  81. If you use bowlingball as the ammo how about the target?A huge cone?

    ReplyDelete
  82. If you can shoot bowling balls with it, it must also be possible to shoot watermelons with it :D YAY

    (and babies)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Andreas, I don't plan to use a wooden bow and simply attach rubber bands to it. The "fork" would be relatively narrow (not too narrow for huge projectiles of course).

I simply would do what I believe Leonardo would have done if he had access to modern rubber. There is no way he would still have employed the wide bow.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Your love for all things Slingshot is epic.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Ah, in that case it makes sense. That also has the advantage of having a single beam. And there is no need for the circle at the end to keep it stable.

If the design allows alterations, it could also be used for launching other things. Like big arrows (and babies). Something that I think would be harder to realize with the cannondesign.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Du solltest ne WM veranstalten ;)
Stefan Raab macht damit ja auch gut Profit ;)

    ReplyDelete
  87. Do you have any locations in mind?

    ReplyDelete
  88. Alter Berliner Zwillenbauer hier.

    ReplyDelete
  89. great idea! I think it should attach the strong harpoon rubber to it. (or where the 2cm diameter tube came from)
    greetings from Hamburg

    ReplyDelete
  90. What is your goal? Do you have a certain distance you would like to obtain or just have it work?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Seeeehr geiles Projekt! viel Spaß beim bauen, ich will ergebnisse sehen xP

    ReplyDelete
  92. Ur suff is amazing :o

    ReplyDelete
  93. It's on Gizmodo so yeah, the chances of going viral are pretty high. Plus it's pretty much the most awesome thing I have ever seen on YouTube. Well done Sir! :)

    ReplyDelete
  94. Did the slingshots get boring for you?
    And do i! Really!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  96. Jorg when am I going to get a panther?Plz pick me!It would mean a lot to me, and it would be my first real pro slingshot.I will charish it for the rest of my life, that is if I get it.Tnx you are great :D

  100. Joerg, I'm telling you it CANNOT be done :)

    ReplyDelete
  101. You definitely need to make one! Also, what about a specially designed shlingshot to launch birdshot? (multiple projectiles rather than one)

    ReplyDelete
  102. I think you'll be a worthy successor to the ideas of Leonardo da Vinci

    ReplyDelete
  103. You are my hero man...me and my daughter(7 years) loves your videos...

    ReplyDelete
  104. Sweet, after this is done can we shoot that car some more? Perhaps even shoot some large fruit out of it pumpkins and watermelons.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Just saw the slingshot canon video. Lawled hard, but still amazed all the same. Very cool..

    ReplyDelete
  106. It looks like you have to build the bow in a foldable manner, then you can construct it as a trailer, just like the sailplanes, that you see from time to time on the highway. :) 10 meter long, 5 meters high, but only 2 in width ... Good luck!

But: We want to see more videos about the Elephant-Catapult :)))

    ReplyDelete
  107. You make some pretty amazing things with Rubber, I wish you all the best with this project and your future projects, I hope you stay active with slingshots and similar things for a long time.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I hope you get good use out of the cannon and of this project! They both look like a lot of work!

    ReplyDelete

    LG

  110. I can't wait to see your slingshot army, I know that's what your planning on making!

    ReplyDelete
  111. I think you're a madman!! I like it!!!

    ReplyDelete
P.S. Was hällst du grundsätzlich von einem kleinen Slingshot Treffen in good old germany. Erfahrungsaustausch, slingshooten, Party.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Übrigens,
deine "deutsche Synchronstimme" inkl. Slang war mal was anderes, aber ein Thank you, bye,bye hätten die von pro7 schon bringen können.
    Viele Grüße aus dem Hunsrück

    ReplyDelete
  114. It was great to see you make the slingshot channel. The Da Vinci project would be totally crazy. Shoot for the world record!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Good Luck! let us know details asap!

    ReplyDelete
  116. This time you wrecked a car. Next time maybe a house?

    ReplyDelete
  117. I think that is awesome! and i like tea2code's idea

    ReplyDelete
  118. how do you plan on cocking that? In your cannon video it looked like it got tough towards the end of the draw. Are you going to still do it manually with gears or are you going to use a vehicle? Either way good luck! Use lots of wood for your safety!

    ReplyDelete
  119. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I wish I had free time to make this kind of stuff...

    ReplyDelete
  121. Your crossbow frames will NOT work. You will have to design something new but the only thing I can think of is two thick boards, one on top of each other (with grooves) to guide the ball, as well as providing support for the frame. The bowling ball is very heavy so you will most likely need spear gun rubber, if not an even stronger rubber. I've been hoping to win one of your slingshots Joerg, but so do many other people. Best luck to you and your ''supposed'' upcoming project!

    ReplyDelete
  122. Don't listen to naysayers, If he read your comments he'd see your going with a different design, more slingshot like. But going to the one comment how do you plan on cocking it? I thought I heard Da Vinci wanted to use treadmills???

    ReplyDelete
  123. Love your work, can't wait! :D

    ReplyDelete
  124. With your skill it should be easy!

    ReplyDelete

Love your work. Keept it up

    ReplyDelete
  126. lol if he really made that... then I would think he's insane!

    ReplyDelete
  127. He is insane - insanely awesome!!!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Good Luck man! We will be watching your progress with it!

    ReplyDelete
  129. Have done a thorough search of Stern View mag, but not able to find the photos of you. Reread your comment and it seems I'm premature. Please advise us or, if possible, provide a link to the photos when they come out.
A small group of my aquaintences are officially impressed and no longer consider me a misguided zealot on sling-shots. Now they are also hoping to win a sling-shot from you. Although I wish them luck, I wish more luck for me! :)

    ReplyDelete
  130. I'll be eager to see this in action...

    ReplyDelete
  131. That will be no problem for you Joerg. Go for it.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Wow, that would be kinda insane. You sure the cops won't bust you for building one that big?

Also, did you get a call about hitting that tower yet? If the authorities see your video you just might. :(

    ReplyDelete
  133. I will cock it the way Leonardo designed it, with a huge screw and a crank lever.

The article is in the printed Stern View Magazine (september issue), the best photos aren't in the free online version.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I'd like to see you challenge a trebuchet. Distance, accuracy and reloading time.

    ReplyDelete
  135. i think you would do a great job doing this. but i would really like to see a video seeing the finished project shooting.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Congrats on the Slingshot cannon doing so well!!!
To actually follow through with Da Vinci's work in itself sounds like a big task! If your up for the challenge I think you should go for it, not many people I think are in position to tackle such a difficult ordeal! I think you have a very high possibility in pulling this off!

    ReplyDelete
  137. Jorg, You have done it! I never laughed so hard in all my life. Awesome is the only word I can think of. When the ammo hit the tower, I fell out of my chair. You must have this creation in your hall of fame. I raise my glass of beer to you for such fine work and showing us all the possibilities of the slingshot.
BTW, I use a pizza cutter to cut the bands...not as good as a roller cutter but you can get by. Jim K (rev. Shnorr)

    ReplyDelete
  138. maybe you could use steel and temper it to a blu colour to make it elastic

    ReplyDelete
  139. Don't copy Leonardo's design, get inspired by it.

    ReplyDelete
  140. This is me leaving a comment to enter the drawing for a slingshot cannon. WHee!!!!

  142. Bowling ball slingshot? Me gusta. Now this i have to see

    ReplyDelete
  143. Love the cannon. Wish I could fire it!

    ReplyDelete
  144. Bowlingballslingshot!?!!?

Plans from the great master Leonardo!?!?!

I am happily waiting to see this video.

I can't imagine a bigger ballshaped object to shot after this one. Maybe you should consider shooting the carwrecks next.

You should set up a build team for the Bowlingballmonster!!!

    ReplyDelete
  145. DO IT!!! The zombies are coming so building heavy weapons are good

    ReplyDelete
  146. If you build it, they will come! :)

    ReplyDelete
  147. Lol, you have to build it and go to the bowling alley

    ReplyDelete
  148. I like that idea! set a bowling record, most pins!

    ReplyDelete
  149. How about human cannonballs next?

    http://gizmodo.com/5836237/watch-people-get-flung-hundreds-of-feet-by-a-human-slingshot-slip-and-slide

    ReplyDelete
  150. Hi i like your videos and was wondering if you were giving away any more slingshots.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Before, you have used rollers to minimize the amount of dead rubber in your draw. I'm a little curious as to why you didn't apply rollers to the front of your cannon and extend the rubber around the cannon a bit. I'm no mathematician, and only have a cursory knowledge of slingshots, but I can't help but wonder what it would do.

It may be something to try out on your scale desk model or your man-portable Sling-cannon.

    ReplyDelete
  152. If that is a person standing on the bow , Joergs would not need to be as big as this as he will use rubber to power the bow so it will take much less space. Just add some massive electric motor to draw the weapon lol

    ReplyDelete
  153. just seen the slingshot cannnon so awesome , gratz on making it, must of been a super fun project....make the crossbow!!!! :D!!

    ReplyDelete
  154. Bender, the rollers extend the draw and make the weapon shorter. That is interesting for compact designs. A cannon does not have to be compact. You want more draw, you simply make the barrel longer.

The rollers would have to withstand the entire draw force, so they would have to be massive as heck. Not worth it.

    ReplyDelete
  155. i think...........that this is a beast i would fight a war if that was on my side
