Making The Cannon Pouch

In preparation for the big event in two weeks, I started to put things together.

Today, I made the pouch for the monster. I want to use boule balls, 2kg, 3kg and 4 kg shot put as ammo. The pouch has to be big enough for the largest ammo type, which has 10 cm (about four inches) in diameter, solid steel. (The pictures show a 15 mm steel ball, typical larger size slingshotz ammo, in comparison.)

As the clamping mechanism needs some space, this means the pouch has to be about 50 cm long and 10 cm high.

I punched in 4 cm holes for the centering and also for the bands.

As I want to go up high in draw weight, I used very thick leather (3 mm), well made and totally strong (I had to hammer about 50 times PER HOLE on the hole puncher, which is really sharp...). I used two layers for a total thickness of 6 mm.

This meant the inner layer had to be cut shorter to end up even when the pouch is wrapped around the ammo.

The pouch alone weighs 200 grams, more than a 30 mm steel ball (130 grams)!

I will used looped Thera Band Gold, so I can simply add one more full width band when the shooting starts.

This pouch will endure crazy draw weights, and it will need every bit of that endurance.

  1. Seems I'm first... Thank you for showing us this step as many may have ignored the huge modifications needed to launch such heavy ammo. That must be some tough leather for that many poundings from your arms. Thank you for also using my favorite, the white ebony sling-shot as a comparison. It and the ammo it fires, which would normally look 'appropriate' and normal are dwarfed in comparison to give us a better perspective of what you are building.
    Well done.

  2. Post script: Looking at the size comparison of the ammo to be used reminds me of science programs showing the comparative size of our sun against the larger stars in the universe. This is a huge difference. Hope you wear your safety glasses at the very least when you pull the trigger. :)

  3. The ammo and pouch remind me of medieval catapults and weaponry. Looks great! Really good work on the hole line up between the two pieces. Can't wait to see the finished work!

  4. I just had to say wow when I saw
    the ammo.
    wtf!

  5. Yikes! This is looking cool. I don't know if it would be necessary given the size of the ammo, but When you're filming the firing, it might help visibility if you paint the ammo orange. Silver or grey can blend into the sky or background pretty good sometimes.

  6. Thinking of a fun comment for this, But I just cant find words ...... :)

    All the best.

  10. Hallo Jörg,

langsam werden die Dimensionen von diesem Monster ersichtlich. Hammer. Unglaublich. Ich bin sehr gespannt auf das Video.
    Viele Grüße aus dem Hunsrück.

  11. I cannot imagine the amount of destruction and damage this thing will do. It seems like it may do more damage than a blunderbuss! Who else is interested in seeing how much damage this does compared to other weapons?

  12. if you have the means of production, you can use a ball to the shape of the gun like a golf ball, it increases the aerodynamics of the shape and range respectively

  13. I'm looking forward to seeing this monster in action. I sure enjoyed the power of the leg-of-lamb guillotine, and I imagine this cannon will be even more entertaining.

  17. Was just thinking that another cool type of ammo might be full drinks cans. It'd be nice to see the most popular type of target being the ammo for a change and it'd also be interesting to see the dynamics of cylindrical ammo versus spherical on a large scale.

  20. Ich habe dein Youtube channel vor kurzem entdeckt und was du machst ist einfach unglaublich. Ich schaue jetzt mein Großvaters Schleuder als Spielzeug im Vergleich zu deine Meisterwerke!

  21. @Angelldizz07: Even a full size muzzle loading cannon is legal, shooting its balls at over 300m/s (1000 fps). Why should a slingshot cannon be illegal then?

The slingshot cannon will be much more silent, though... but also a lot less powerful.

  22. @The Slingshot Channel

In Places like New york city even slingshots are illegal

  23. Yellow :)
    @ Angelldizz07 - thank god, law isn’t everywhere the same ;)

Joerg, where do you intend to shoot this toy? Your backyard is pretty big, but probably not big enough for the slingcannon :)
    Cheers

  25. We will shoot this at Tobbias's place, he got more than 170 acres of land. I am very grateful, without his generosity the project would not have been possible. He will keep the cannon afterwards!

I love to watch all your videos in youtube. I am trying to make a slingshot where more than shots can be made at one go with accuracy.
Your 200 lbs ueber slingshot with assault rifle scope is mind blowing.
